EUmies Awards 2026 Exhibition opens in Bucharest as part of Romanian Design Week
The EUmies Awards 2026 Exhibition has opened in Bucharest as part of Romanian Design Week, marking the first international presentation of the exhibition following its debut in Barcelona during the EUmies Awards Days 2026.
Presented in a photographic format, the exhibition showcases the seven finalist works of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards 2026: the Architecture Winner, the Emerging Winner and the five finalist projects selected by the jury. Together, these works offer a compelling overview of the most significant architectural achievements realised across Europe in recent years and reflect on some of the key challenges facing contemporary society, including transformation, reuse, care, public space, cultural infrastructure and new ways of inhabiting existing buildings and territories.
The exhibition is organised by Romanian Design Week, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes Bucharest, the Embassy of Spain in Romania, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urban Planning.
Romanian Design Week is one of the most important and visible events dedicated to design, architecture and innovation in Romania. From 2026 onwards, it has evolved into the Bucharest Design Festival, expanding into a month-long programme spread across multiple venues throughout the Romanian capital.
The opening was attended by José Antonio Hernández Pérez-Solórzano, Ambassador of Spain to Romania, and Abel Murcia Soriano, Director of Instituto Cervantes Bucharest, underlining the institutional support for the exhibition and for the dissemination of contemporary European architecture.
As part of the programme, Ivan Blasi, Director of the EUmies Awards and Director of Programmes at the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, delivered a lecture at the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urban Planning, one of Romania’s leading schools of architecture. The lecture brought together students, professors and architecture professionals and focused on the role of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards in identifying, discussing and disseminating the most relevant architectural transformations taking place across Europe today.
The academic event was followed by a guided visit to the exhibition, offering students, educators, architects and the wider public an opportunity to engage directly with the finalist projects and to discuss the ideas, approaches and architectural strategies that shaped the 2026 edition of the Prize.
Following its presentation in Barcelona, the exhibition in Bucharest opens a new chapter in the international itinerary of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards 2026, continuing the mission of the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe to promote architectural quality, cultural exchange and public debate on the built environment across Europe and beyond.
