Art Studios of the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University

The site originally housed structures from different periods, including a dismantled shooting range pavilion and a substation. We designed a building with clean, simple forms that contrast with the historic setting, adding dynamic energy. Resembling a modern gallery more than a school, it creates a dialogue with the surrounding neoclassical architecture. The extension includes creative workshop, a painting studio with quality lighting, and a top-floor multimedia studio as a white/black box with adjustable color backlighting.

Our design was shaped by the client’s needs and several constraints. A major challenge was keeping the substation fully operational during construction. We solved this with a solid monolithic reinforced concrete structure that bridges over the substation, completely avoiding any impact on the structural stability of the historic building’s and the elevator shaft. Another challenge was maintaining hygiene in surrounding buildings while bringing daylight into deep studios without side windows. We shifted floors horizontally to create skylight opportunities. The building’s final shape was refined through daylight and sun studies to minimize impact on nearby homes.

Pure orthogonal form is highlighted by smooth white render and large frameless glazing, setting it apart from typical construction. Within given budget, the interior is practical, with white-painted concrete and epoxy floors. Despite modest space sizes, interiors feel airy and light. The building is constructed in energy class A, making it exceptionally energy-efficient. The materials and technologies used are low-maintenance. As a result, the Faculty of Education received quality architecture at an affordable price.
